Ethos, Values and Equality Objectives

We promote our South Craven Learner principles of Courage, Enquiry and Growth and focuses on preparing our students for life as active and productive citizens. We believe our students should possess these three traits to develop into well-rounded individuals. It is embedded firmly into our curriculum and underpins everything we do.

Within these principles, there are nine traits which we expect all students to apply to their academic and everyday life:

The ‘South Craven Learner wheel’ can be found all around school; from outside the school gates to classrooms and offices.

Students should recognise and understand the importance of the South Craven Learner as a vital step of their South Craven journey.

As well as the South Craven Learner, our PRIDE ethos is introduced to our students when they join our Sixth Form. Just as we are proud of all that we do and offer, we want students to be proud of all they are and all they are trying to be.

We use the acronym PRIDE to define our Sixth Form ethos:

• Know their Destination
• Strive for Excellence

Students

• Arrive at school on time every day with the correct equipment.
• Wear the school uniform correctly at all times (or, in the case of Sixth Form students, make sure clothing is appropriate and suitable for a place of work).
• Follow school rules.
• Work hard in lessons and ask for help if unsure.
• Join in extracurricular activities and get involved with enrichment.
• Show respect to students, staff, visitors, the wider community and the school site/facilities.
• Model responsible behaviour.
• Take pride in being a South Craven student.
• Be aware of the importance of safeguarding and contact a Safeguarding Leader if they have a safeguarding concern.

Parents and Carers

• Support students in their learning and progression.
• Ensure students arrive to school on time every day with the correct equipment.
• Support the school rules.
• Contact the school or appropriate staff member if they have any issues or queries.
• Ensure good communication between home and school, and update school if there are any changes to communication.
• Encourage students to participate in extracurricular and enrichment activities, and support them whilst taking part.
• Be aware of the importance of safeguarding and contact a Safeguarding Leader if they have a safeguarding concern.

Staff

• Have a positive attitude in and out of the classroom.
• Provide a safe environment for students to progress and learn.
• Ensure the design of the curriculum is responsible to the needs of its learners.
• Have a smart appearance.
• Model (and expect) high standards of behaviour.
• Provide innovative and exciting lessons and enrichment activities.
• Be aware of the importance of safeguarding and contact a Safeguarding Leader if they have a safeguarding concern.
• Ensure good communication is in place between home and school.
• Promote the ethos of the South Craven Learner and Sixth Form PRIDE.

We are delighted to announce that our school has successfully achieved the Red Kite Alliance RED Award.

The RED Award recognises schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to equality, diversity, respect for individuals and community cohesion. Achieving this award reflects the work of our staff, students, parents/carers and wider community in creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected and able to thrive.

The award process provided us with an opportunity to:

• Evaluate and celebrate our current provision for equality, diversity and inclusion.
• Reflect on the strengths of our school community and identify areas for continued development.
• Demonstrate our commitment to fostering a cohesive, respectful and welcoming environment for all.
• Showcase the rich diversity and positive relationships that exist across our school.

We are incredibly proud to have received this recognition. The award acknowledges the work already taking place across the school, while also encouraging us to continue developing our provision and ensuring that inclusion remains at the heart of everything we do.

Feedback from the Red Kite Award Assessors

South Craven School demonstrates a clear and genuine commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, with these values embedded across all aspects of school life. The RED Award Self-Evaluation review, supported by an impressive range of evidence, highlights how EDI is not seen as a standalone initiative, but rather as an integral part of the school’s culture, leadership and everyday practice.

A particular strength is the development of student leadership and EDI working groups, giving students meaningful opportunities to influence school culture, lead initiatives and promote inclusion across the community. The school has also strengthened support through initiatives such as the Student Support Hub, wellbeing clubs, Young Carers provision and Men’s Minds Matter, helping all students to feel safe, supported and valued. The curriculum and enrichment programme further support this inclusive ethos.

Diverse representation is embedded across subject areas, assemblies and awareness events, while opportunities such as active bystander training, inclusive performances, careers events and international visits help broaden students’ understanding of equality and global citizenship. Staff and governors regularly engage in EDI training, and leaders ensure that equality remains central to strategic planning and safeguarding.

Overall, these actions reflect a school culture built on respect, belonging and aspiration. Congratulations on the excellent work taking place to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across the whole school community - it is truly impressive!
