Further Education/Colleges
Further Education (FE) refers to educational choices made after your 16th birthday. It covers all qualifications lower than a degree. Everyone has to study FE until they are 18.
Colleges provide a different learning environment to school as they are open to the wider community and tend to have a wider range of courses on offer. Colleges are more informal and are required to work more independently than you would at school.
Higher Education/University
Higher education is continued learning from the age of 18.
There is no set path to take and there are all sorts of degrees, diplomas, vocational, foundation, full time and part-time courses for students to think about. You can also choose to study at a particular institution or take part in a long-distance course.
Why go to University?
- Explore a subject area you are passionate about
- Challenge your mind
- Try new things
- Exciting social life with like-minded people
- Once in a lifetime opportunities e.g. a year abroad
- Gain independence
- Add value to your CV
- Increase employability
- Improve your chances of gaining a high paid job
