Being able to communicate in another language opens doors in students' future lives and careers, providing personal enrichment and making pupils more competitive in the jobs market in Europe and the rest of the world.

GCSE Exam Board: AQA

Paper 1: Listening (25%)

  • Section A: Questions and answers in English
  • Section B: Questions and answers in French/German/Spanish
  • Duration: 30 minutes (Foundation tier)/45 minutes (Higher tier)

Paper 2: Speaking (25%)

  • Section A: Role play
  • Section B: Photo card
  • Section C: Conversation
  • Duration: 7-9 minutes plus 12 minutes preparation time (Foundation tier)/10-12 minutes plus 12 minutes preparation time (Higher tier)

Paper 3: Reading (25%)

  • Section A: Questions and answers in English
  • Section B: Questions and answers in French/German/Spanish
  • Duration: 45 minutes (Foundation tier)/1 hour (Higher tier)

Paper 4: Writing (25%)

Foundation Tier
  • Question 1: Message in response to a photo (4 sentences)
  • Question 2: Short passage in response to 4 bullet points (40 words task)
  • Question 3: Translation from English into French/German/Spanish
  • Question 4: Structured writing task in response to 4 bullet points (90 words task)
  • Duration: 1 hour
Higher Tier
  • Question 1: Structured writing task in response to 4 bullet points (90 words task)
  • Question 2: Open-ended writing task (150 words task)
  • Question 3: Translation from English into French/German/Spanish
  • Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
