Being able to communicate in another language opens doors in students' future lives and careers, providing personal enrichment and making pupils more competitive in the jobs market in Europe and the rest of the world.

Paper 1: Listening (25%)

  • Section A: Questions and answers in English
  • Section B: Questions and answers in French
  • Duration: 30 - 45 minutes

Paper 2: Speaking (25%)

  • Section A: Role play
  • Section B: Photo card
  • Section C: Conversation
  • Duration: 10 minutes approx.

Paper 3: Reading (25%)

  • Section A: Questions and answers in English
  • Section B: Questions and answers in French
  • Duration: 45 - 60 minutes

Paper 4: Listening (25%)

  • Section A: Structured writing task in response to five compulsory bullet points
  • Section B: Open-ended writing task in response to four compulsory bullet points
  • Section C: Translation from English to French
  • Duration: 30 - 45 minutes

When the school has to close during term time or when we have students who have ‘enforced absences’ (for example who are shielding or self-isolating during the COVID-19 pandemic), we provide work to ensure that learning continues.

Trip to Berlin, Germany

  • The History and German visit to Berlin aims to provide cultural enrichment and an all-round experience to German History and Language in order for students to develop a better understanding of German life, both past and present
  • Day trips include a visit to the Holocaust memorial, Sachsenhausen, the Reichstag and a trip to Berlin Zoo!

UK - German Connection (British Council Scholarships)

  • We support annual applications to the UK-German connection youth ambassador schemes
  • Students from Year 10 and Year 12 have the opportunity to stay with a host family and visit a German school for two weeks during the summer holidays
  • The project also encourages participants to deliver a presentation to a local primary school about their experience, thus developing important communication and presentation skills, whilst also inspiring younger students to pursue their language learning

Exchange Students

  • We welcome our German exchange students into lessons to offer insights into life in Germany and to provide students with the opportunity to ask questions and converse in German with a native speaker
