Duke of Edinburgh Award
“We help young people build life-long belief in themselves, supporting them to take on their own challenges, follow their passions, and discover talents they never knew they had. Because when you prove to yourself that you’re ready for anything, nothing can hold you back.”
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at South Craven School will empower young people to create opportunities to learn in new environments. The award is designed to be inclusive for all students at the school and will develop young people who have integrity, commitment and an enthusiastic and dynamic approach to planning their futures.
At South Craven School the award starts in Year 9, where students will have access to the Bronze Award. Students who have completed the Bronze Award will have the opportunity to undertake the Silver Award.
The Gold Award is available for students aged 16 years and above, including people who have never undertaken the award before.
To complete the Award at each level, participants must take part in the following:
- Volunteering in the local community
- Pursuing a skill or hobby
- Taking part in physical recreation
They are also required to plan, train for and complete a self-sufficient expedition. This section is perhaps the most demanding and involves many weeks of training to ensure that the participant is competent to undertake a walk lasting several days, carrying a full pack over varying terrain.
Participants pursuing the Gold Award are required to take part in a residential experience. This involves spending five days and four nights in a new environment with people who the participant has not met before.
The award takes a great deal of commitment from young people. It develops dynamic team players, who have integrity and willingly take on responsibility. Above all, it’s a fun experience!
