What are you doing now?Bobbie Maiden.jpg

I’m working in a pub - I graduated in Drama from the University of Huddersfield in 2020, so I’m figuring out what I want to do next!

What advice would you give to your 17-year-old self?

There’s a lot I would tell myself!

I would first tell myself to breathe - I always thought I had to have everything planned to a T and if I didn’t I was a failure. If you need advice, talk to your teacher or someone you trust.

I was disheartened when I didn’t get into my first choice of university, but sometimes the bad things that happen in our lives put us directly on the path to the best things that will ever happen to us. I’ve had some amazing opportunities at Huddersfield, and although I wish I’d gone to a drama school I’m still thankful for what I’ve done, as it’s opened doors that may not have opened otherwise.

You don’t have to go to university straight away, or at all - everyone does things at their own pace. At the end of the day, it was the tortoise who won the race in the end!

Work hard at what you do and believe in yourself. If you do that, anything is possible!

What are you most proud of?

I’m proud of how far I’ve come since leaving South Craven. I’m proud that I decided to go to university - I never believed in myself at school and considered not applying.

I’m also proud I didn’t listen to negativity, made my own decision in my career path and made sure I was always prepared. I was so close to giving up school and university because I thought I couldn’t do it, and I’m proud that I kept going.

Finally, I’m proud that I’m able to share my experiences with people going through the same thing right now.
